Subtitled, "A Complete Guide to the Art of Voice Throwing, Lip Control, Doll Manipulation and Ventriloquial Presentation."
This is the first edition of Craggs' classic work on vent, originally published by ARCAS ("The Academy of Recorded Crafts, Arts and Sciences") in 1944. (An updated version of this book, entitled "Ventriloquism From A to Z" was published in Great Britain in 1969.) W.S. Berger himself - the founder of Vent Haven Museum and the first "ventriloquarian" - recommended this book heartily. It gives in-depth insight into the proper development and production of the true ventriloquial illusion. The chapters on near-distant ventriloquism and particularly the distant voice are outstanding. Also includes a number of complete routines, plus assorted gags and bits. The section on vent novelties is also detailed and fascinating!
What I truly love about this original volume of Craggs' work is his no-nonsense approach to ventriloquism and his strong views on what is "proper" in a vent act (much of this was edited out of the later, updated work). He decries the so-called "comedy movements", i.e., wiggling ears, fright wig, etc.,.... going so far as to refer to the crying effect as "disgusting." In fact, he plainly states, "If a performer needs to rely on such aids to obtain a response from his audience he should try something other than ventriloquism." Wow! I *like* this guy! It's not only one of my all-time favorite books on ventriloquism... I truly believe it's one of the best ever written. The sections on sound substitutions are some of the best I've ever read. Likewise, the chapter on articulation and enunciation should be required reading for anyone and everyone who wants to be (or already thinks they are!) a ventriloquist.
52pp, approximately 8-1/2" x 13"; softcover with charming illustrations. This SCARCE book is fine condition with some shelf-wear and staining on the front cover, minor curled corners, etc. Still, a fine example of a hard-to-find and desirable book.
