I "discovered" the Stamp Album trick in the late 80's. I was doing a LOT of banquet shows then and when I saw this, I was intrigued. I'd used a "Magic Coloring Book" in the few children's shows I had done, but had never considered it (or anything like it) for my regular adult shows. People were always asking me how I got interested in magic, so I thought I'd use this routine as a way of illustrating how I had tried different hobbies until I "finally" discovered magic. Much to my surprise (and delight!), I found that whereas the coloring book always got a huge response from kids due to the byplay involved, the Stamp Album got huge reactions from adult (or family) audiences, due simply to the amazing changes that occur! I always thought it was funny... kids would go crazy at the changes, but adults would simply gasp and applaud, as if it were the most amazing illusion anyone could perform. I was always delighted that the simple principle of the "coloring book' could bring about such wild responses across all age groups. The "Stamp Album" has been a staple in my shows now for more than thirty years!

The basic routine goes like this: You talk about the different hobbies you played around with until you discovered magic: Bee-keeping (too many stings!), growing roses (too many thorns!), raising chinchillas (too many bites!), etc. There is a LOT of room here for funny hobbies and comedy lines, etc. Then, you say that you finally found the perfect "safe" hobby...stamp collecting! Until you got your first paper cut! So then you tried magic and found a good fit. As you've been talking about the different kinds of hobbies you tried, you're leafing through a plain yellow notebook, as if checking your old notes. You can even refer to it as your "Hobby Notebook". You now explain that you wanted to show the audience a little about your old hobbies, but the bees flew way, the roses died and you don't know WHERE the chinchillas are! (again, lots more room here for comedy). BUT... you do have one last Stamp Album left, and you'll be happy to show it and try not to get a paper cut in the process.

The "Hobby Notebook" is now thumbed through, with the pages being shown to the audience. The pages are all blank. "Every time I would quit a hobby, I'd tear that page out. I'm lucky there are ANY pages left!" Now, with a simple fold, the plain yellow "Hobby Notebook" visibly transforms into a Stamp Album with a striking full-color cover! That's Magical Moment #1.

You flip through the Stamp Album, showing its pages. Where the audience saw blank pages just a few moments before, now are printed pages just like a real Stamp Album, with squares and names of countries with sample stamps PRINTED in black and white on every page, denoting the place where you paste the stamps as you acquire them. That's Magical Moment #2!

You now display a packet of loose stamps, and pour these loose stamps into the album. With a magic pass, you flip through the album again showing the audience the pages, and all the stamps have magically appeared pasted in position on every page! That's Magical Moment #3 ... and a natural applause cue!!!

That's three STRONG magical moments right in a row! And all you have to do is flip through the pages of a book! What could be easier?

The "Whole World Stamp Album" looks exactly like a real stamp album and is printed with a gorgeous four color cover.
