Wonderful little primer book on vent, published by Davenport's Magic of
London as part of their "Demon Series" of booklets for the magic trade.
Maurice Hurling was a well-respected pro vent during the early and middle part
of the last century. His opus would come with the later publication of
"The Concert Ventriloquist" (one of my all-time favorite books on vent),
but this earlier work (published 1934) is chock full of great advice
and tips. The vent instruction itself is extremely brief, but it's all
there. He doesn't touch on the distant voice or other tricks at all...
this booklet was really designed for a magician who wanted to add a bit
of ventriloquism to his magic act. On the other hand, more than half of
the booklet is given over to gags and complete routines. Hurling was
proud of his "new and original" material. Naturally, it's dated now, but
there are still a few good lines that can be "tweaked" for the modern
audience, and several of the premises are perfectly good today. Includes
a great full-page ad in the back of the booklet for Davenport's various
vent figures.
