Paul Winchell was considered one of the greatest ventriloquists, entertainers and innovators of all time. His career spanned more than 60 years and included radio, television and film. He had several very popular television programs in the 1950s and 1960s. His most popular TV show, "Winchell - Mahoney Time", aired its last episode in 1968.
In 1983, Paul decided it was time to once again produce a new television special and market it to the new cable TV industry that was just taking off in popularity. This special was videotaped live with multiple cameras in 1983 at Gazzarri's, a popular nightclub on the Sunset Strip in Hollywood, CA.
Since Paul had aged, he thought it would be a good idea to have his famous sidekicks Jerry Mahoney and Knucklehead Smiff age as well. Professional ventriloquist Willie Tyler (and Lester!) were also asked to appear on the show as special guests. Paul mixed new material with clips from his old television shows. There was a live audience at the taping. The show was recorded and edited, but unfortunately never aired.
The video was never purchased by the cable industry or networks. If not for professional ventriloquist, comedian and figure maker, Jerry Layne (who was a very close lifelong friend to Paul) and Sony Studios editor Mike Clark, this video would never have been available.
Here is the show that you've never seen, with rare footage of Paul, Jerry, Knuck, Tessie, Oswald and Willie Tyler. Enjoy this classic piece of ventriloquism history!
